Château Phélan Segur 2019

The estate
Proudly overlooking the Gironde estuary since the beginning of the 19th century, the Château Phélan-Ségur vineyard is divided into four separate plots in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The 70 hectares of vines are planted in an exceptional clay soil in the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The vintage
The mild and rainy spring brought a rather early budding and flowering, suggesting a great potential for the vintage. The radiant summer was followed by an Indian summer, which created the perfect conditions just before the harvest.

The blend
Cabernet sauvignon (76,1%), merlot (42%), cabernet franc (2%).

Vintage: 2019
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Produced by Château Phélan Ségur

Chateau Phelan Segur is located in the eastern part of Saint-Estephe in Bordeaux. The chateau lies on gravelly alluvial soils that were deposited 650,000 years ago. Xavier Gardinier and his three sons now look after the 70-hectare estate. It is planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot which have an average age of 35 years. During the harvest, the grapes are hand-picked and screened then aged in half new barrels for between 14 and 18 months.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Phelan Segur leaps with notes of redcurrant, blackcurrant cordial, and black cherries plus hints of fragrant earth, menthol, pencil shavings, and violets with a waft of anise. Medium to full-bodied with bags of grace and elegance, featuring layers of vibrant red and black fruits with floral accents and supported by satiny, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant.
