Gaia and Rey Chardonnay 2006

Named after one of his daughters, Gaia Gaja, and after his grandmother, Clotilde Rey, this is an excellent Chardonnay, produced in a smart, rich and without a doubt, elegant style. An abundance of ripe pears, buttery, marzipan, exotic fruits and a well-defined acidity for a 15+ year-old white wine.

Vintage: 2006
Grape Varieties: Chardonnay

Produced by Gaja

Gaja is an Italian wine producer from the Piemonte region in the district of Langhe, chiefly producing a number of Barbaresco and Barolo wines, and later diversified into Brunello and "Super-Tuscan" production. Its current owner and president Angelo Gaja is credited with developing techniques that have revolutionised winemaking in Italy, and terms such as "the undisputed king of Barbaresco", and "the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world" have been applied to him, and whose Barbaresco wine is considered a status symbol on a par with Château Lafite-Rothschild or Krug.

Tasting Notes

The 2006 Chardonnay Gaia & Rey is a wonderfully pure, minerally Chardonnay laced with varietal fruit buffered by silky, elegant tannins. The French oak needs some time to incorporate into the wine, but this remains an extraordinarily beautiful, refined Chardonnay of notable pedigree. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.
