Moulin a Vent, Chateau des Bachelards
The terroir of Château des Bachelards is mainly saprolite pink granite, with soils that are around 350 million years old. It is located on the foothills of the Massif Central. These terroirs are common to the northern Rhône appellations of Côte Rôtie, Condrieu and some parts of Hermitage. The vineyard is very densely planted (10,000/ha) with a large majority of very old vines (60-100 years) of Gamay, Viognier and Syrah planted by massal selection onto Riparia Gloire and Vialla, giving plants of the very highest quality. A conservatory of vine varieties was created in the Château with the help of Lilian Berillon, in order to replant using the estate's own vines via massal selection. All of this is conducted according to standards of organic agriculture certified by Ecocert and biodynamic agriculture certified by Demeter. Château des Bachelards is the only wine estate of Fleurie, Saint-Amour and Moulin-à-Vent to be doubly certified organic and biodynamic. The wines are lively. The estate does not practice either carbonic maceration or semi-carbonic, or thermovinification. It uses no artificial yeasts. The wines have their own identity and are unlike any others; they specifically express the Château des Bachelards’ terroir.
Produced by Chateau des Bachelards
Château des Bachelards' vineyard was established by the monks of Cluny around the year 1100 and has only had three owners since - yes, seriously! The vineyard stretches over 12 hectares, 6 of which are in Fleurie in an area immediately surrounding the Château, bordered by an enclosed plot cultivated as a garden and the plots in Moulin-à-Vent and in Saint-Amour. Countess Alexandra de Vazeilles has been the happy owner of all of this since 2014.
